The True Cost of Lice

“I Cannot Afford to Have My Child Treated by The Texas Lice Squad!”
A Common Misconception

- Penny Warner, RN, NE-BC

The average family spends approximately 3 to 6 months (some may even spend years) trying to rid their child of head lice. Typically, an over-the-counter product containing pyrethrin will be purchased for the first treatment and then this is repeated in 7 days. Two weeks later, the parents realize their child still has lice. Next, they will try another brand of a permethrin-based product and then, again, repeat in 7 days. Two weeks later, they realize they still have lice. At this point, a search of the Internet will be done where lice and nit killing products ‘guaranteed’ to work abound. More products are purchased, more combing and cleaning is done; and yet, the lice and nits remain. Totally frustrated, as well as exhausted, a call is made to the family’s physician and a prescription for malathion is obtained. Two weeks later, the little critters are back! Parents will also typically dispose of personal items, such as brushes, hair ornaments, and pillows; as well as spend countless hours cleaning and doing laundry – most of which is totally unnecessary. So, let’s take a look at how much the average family will spend to treat ONE

RID Complete Kit x 2 treatments $49.98
NIX Complete Kit x 2 treatments $43.98
Products purchased from the Internet $100.00
Malathion (Ovide) 2 oz. x 2 treatments $265.98
Replace personal items that were discarded $150.00
Cost of missed work days (average 2 days) $400.00
Cost of missed school days (average 2 days) $74.00
TOTAL $1083.94
And they still have lice!

Costs that cannot be calculated:
  • Emotional stress
  • Time spent combing
  • Time spent cleaning
  • Stress on friendships
  • Stress on marriage & family
  • Lack of sleep/rest (for you & your child)
  • Applying pesticides/poisons to your child

  • Now let’s compare the above to a family who came to The Texas Lice Squad as soon as they were aware their children had lice. We recently had a family of SIX (4 girls plus Mom and Dad) come into our office and all were positive for lice. Their TOTAL bill, including products purchased: $820.98, which averaged out to $136.83 per person!

Their family’s lice problem was resolved very quickly, safely, and efficiently. There were no countless hours spent combing (can you imagine combing out 4 girls!) and cleaning, their stress level was kept to a minimum, little time was missed from work and school and they were able to go back to their normal routine. Most importantly, they and their four children were not exposed to pesticides or poisons.

Can you afford to not have your child treated by the Texas lice Squad?
